Light Movie

(A review of In the Land of Women)It's a very temperate, well-paced story. It has no plot twists, surprises or anything unexpected. It a story of escape, and the requisite eventual enlightenment. About a writer and his writer's block, of course. But it was decent, and seriously crafted. The actors were cast perfectly into their screentime-deprived roles. The story could have been better if it didn't try to deal with so many storylines. The mother's breast cancer could have been made into a background story so we could see more of her interaction with her husband. I like movies that have a natural pace, story-wise. And I would have wanted this movie to be longer. There were no explicit tying up of loose ends. But I think the overall quality of the story was organic and any more additions would ruin it. 0 comments, Reply to this entry

(A review of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder)Returning to the roots of the original movie but not quite as funny, this one was a good enough sequel. Philosophy and religion are not really easy to incorporate in a good satire. This one went over the top I think. The inclusion of mecha at the end was an interesting touch. The problem with this movie, I think is that all the actors and characters they play are not as young, fun and trouble-making as the first movie. The rebellious, naive and wide-eyed youngsters are no longer there. Instead we have a flight attendant who is confused with her accent, a reluctant jealous-boyfriend, and filler characters. It lacks good characters. Even Rico is so uninspired and shouts at the right moments. There's no real reason to do so, but it's what the character so should do. It's all very mechanical. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Only good for a rent

(A review of Quantum of Solace)While still better than the sleazy DOM-ness of any of Pierce Brosnan's James Bond, this one was boring, chaotic and generally pointless. James was jumping from place to place on a whim, his motives not quite explained or logical. Still watchable but not great. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
